Magnificent efforts by the mosaicists on the ‘Water Carrier’ and the ‘Wise Men’ sculptures…many thanks to all, and especially Marion who has spent long hours at the site with all materials on hand ready to go each day
The Mallee Garden has been added to, has had its final irrigation fittings…the Mallee in the centre of the stump garden is growing beautifully and last years plants are looking ‘at home’…thankyou to the gardeners who have been helping Noreen on the first Sunday of the month
The Manang Youth group have met with SHRCC and the Youth facilitator Kane Sparks…MIG looks forward to doing everything possible to making those ideas/plans a reality [more information in later articles!]
The P12 College Advance Group have been helping with watering, the sculptures, tidying Lowan Park, and sweeping the ‘Travellers’ rest area…Thankyou …and for your work on the Hall garden
Funding was received for signage for the Manangatang Cemetery from the SHRCC

Manangatang Sculptures

The very last pebble was set in place on the Three Wise Men and The Water Carrier, the sculptures at the Manangatang Mallee Garden, on Friday 2^nd July. After hundreds, if not thousands of hours work, Marion Caccianiga stood back and proclaimed…

The sculptures are finished!

From the design, conception and modelling…to the welding…the chicken wiring…the fibreglass wrapping…concrete mixing…the first of many layers of ‘special’ sculpting concrete…to the final layer of the mosaics… a large number of our community have been involved in the creation of these works of art. THANK YOU!

Marion Caccianiga was the perfect teacher. She demonstrated patience and passion in her guidance throughout the entire project. Often ready to put in the long hours during less than ideal conditions, offered plenty of praise and encouragement, rang around for working bee helpers many times, and was always organised with all the equipment and materials needed for our project. A huge THANK-YOU to Marion.

Please take the time to go up close to our community sculptures. Many people have been surprised at the amount of detail and historical treasures that have been embedded into them…they are a real treasure trove of all sorts of interesting items…badges, old machinery parts, jewellery, glittery swirls, taps (!). Take a look for yourself.

SUMMARY OF MINUTES 13.04.2010

Football match to be held on the Saturday followed by night entertainment.

People to begin collecting in earnest material for the book. Questions on the last Linkup for ideas.

Farm tours to include a look at new and old machinery. VFF has suggested that names of blocks be put on fences so people know where and who paddocks belong to. They have also suggested that parish maps be placed in the main street showing original and some current owners.

Different organizations to assist with the catering. Let Val Holdsworth know if you can help.

Possible place for tents and caravans could be south of the Community Centre.

Memorabilia to be purchased to include bricks, glasses, t-shirts, wine, etc. Forms will be sent out prior to the weekend to gauge popularity of various types of memorabilia.

Mandy has prepared a marketing kit to be given to prospective sponsors.

Senior Citizens have donated $500.00 which is fantastic. Funds are desperately needed to assist with many aspects of organization for the Manang 100.

Mallee Garden Update...Last week April 2010

Under the leadership of artist, Marian Caccianiga, a mighty team of workers have been adding to mosaic designs on the two sculptures, and completing the concrete covering on the Water Carrier....the Three Wise Men are gradually being covered as the 'mosaicists work for hours on their designs, using stones, pebbles, marbles, badges, trinkets, coins, medals etc....

Australia Day Breakfast was hosted by Manangatang Improvement Group.

It was the biggest crowd ever.

Cr David Quayle represented the Swan Hill City Council and presented the Junior and Senior Citizenship awards to Peter Templeton and Melanie Grant, respectively.

Frank Holdsworth was the worthy recipient of the MIG Volunteer award for

2009.

The guest speaker, an Australia Day Ambassador sponsored by Woolworths/Safeway was AMY TUBBS Harness Racing Driver.

Amy, at 26 years old has amassed some magnificent achievements as a driver, trainer, and as a person.

She spoke of her life, achievements, her role as an ambassador and inspired all with the way she has been able to follow her dreams.

MIG thanks to all who helped set up for the day, donate eggs/tomatoes, cook breakfast and loan equipment.

After the ceremony and formal proceedings a swim was enjoyed by many as the area was packed up.

Many thanks to the Swimming Pool Committee for the use of such a great venue.

The harvest is nearing its end.

The Manangatang Graincorp Receival Site has experienced its busiest and longest grain receival for some time, with harvest commencing early to mid November, and tapering off as December 25 approaches.

Record rainfall also fell in the district....[approx 86 mils] which helped to prolong the harvest period.

Some images from the grain receival site at Manangatang, which is ably managed by Bevan Langley [pictured above].

Hopefully at a later date some detail of grain tonnages at the Manangatang site will be published.

Mallee Garden Sculptures

There has been much interest and discussion about our new sculpture "Three Wise Men". The sculpture was designed by Marian Cacianiga and has involved hundreds of hours of work - from research, design, model construction, framework construction, wire mesh wrapping, fibreglass coating, cement rendering to the final mosaic process.

Arts Victoria funded a three day workshop with visiting artist Glenda Cornell, who travelled from Shepparton to teach us how apply render and mosaic the sculpture. A large number of community members committed many hours during the three day workshop. The sculpture is not yet complete and work to finish it will recommence once another load of Winstone cement from Canada has been sourced.

Thank you to Rodney Caccianiga and Sam White for welding together the framework. Thank you to all those who were involved in wire and fiberglass mesh wrapping and/or the render/mosaic processes including Max, Maria, Cheryse, Pat Ryan, Freule, Diane Plant, Sharon Trewin, Cathy, Donna McKenzie, Marie Ryan, Leonie Lambert, Libby, Cheryse, Cheryl, Chris Plant, Cathy, Kay Wright, Donna Barry, Jan, Trudy, Joan Holmes, Rachelle, Kelly, Noah and Finn.

A special thank you to Leonie Lambert for generously donating badges for embedding into the sculptures. The badges, which belonged to her parents, showed the family commitment to many Manangatang organisations. See how many you can find embedded on the sculpture.

Its all happening in Manangatang .....

As you can see, the Deb Ball was held in the Community Stadium on Friday 2 October 2009...and what a night that was!

Sunday 4 October...the opening of Senior Citizens Week at the Manangatang Public Hall by the Mayor of the Swan Hill Rural City Council, Councilor Greg Cruickshank. Entertainment was provided by the Robinvale Secondary College Show Band and singers from the Robinvale Tongan community. A delicious afternoon tea was put on by the Manangatang Senior Citizens and Manangatang community.

The Manangatang Races are happening on Saturday October 10 at the Recreation Reserve, followed by entertainment in the Manang Big Shed......Fashions on the Field, excellent choice of food, Jeff Gibson, and of course don't forget the horses!

Sunday 18 October ....St Patricks Family Group once again will stage the Annual Flower Show in the Manangatang Public Hall...entries in floral, craft, art, photography sections all welcome....

Manangatang Community Stadium Debutante Ball 2009

Manangatang Community Stadium held the 2009 Debutante Ball on October 2. The debs and their partners must have been quite an attraction, because a great crowd showed up on the night to watch the presentation. Most stayed to enjoy the dancing and socialising afterwards, with a good number still there at 1am. Thanks to those that remained and made short work of the clean-up.

Mallee Garden Sculptures: Creation

Marian Caccianiga has designed 2 sculptures for the Manangatang Mallee Garden to the theme -“The Changing Shape of Manangatang”.

The paper mache models will be displayed in the main street. They are scaled down versions of the real sculptures. The sculptures will be made to be approximately 2 m in height and 2 m in width. They will be rendered in cement and mosaiced with pebbles, glass, rusted nuts, bolts and cogs.

During September the metal frameworks will be transported to the garden where they will be permanently fixed on site to concrete footings.

A three day workshop with a visiting artist from Shepparton (Glenda Cornell) has been organised for September 24, 25, and 26, during which members from the community will render and mosaic the sculptures.

Manangatang Improvement Group Inc. has continued its commitment towards improving the facilities and environment of Manangatang; in particular, the beautification of Wattle Street.

MIG members, the various community groups and SHRCC Staff have cooperated to bring to fruition the various projects outlined in the Manangatang Community Plan…very much appreciation to Fiona Gorman for her commitment to our Community Plan.

MIG meetings have been held monthly, except for the summer break. These meetings have been regularly attended by SHRCC staff and council.

MIG members have contributed/participated in:

Community Planning…the shower block and travellers’ rest area, the obtaining of the shade sails for the BBQ, the pram and gopher ramps around town, the one bus stop for Manangatang, the refurbishment of Lowan Park and lately the creation of a Mallee Garden on the SE side of Wattle Street.

Many thanks to the Noreen and the garden committee for their work towards this garden.

The stump wall is a winner. We look forward to the completion of the plantings and the placement of the planned sculptures.

MIG received a cheque for $300.00 from the Manang. Reunion [Fitzroy Gardens] to be used for a garden seat to commemorate district pioneers

Landcare News

New Project
Manangatang Landcare have had their 'Cutting edge cropping techniques to establish Mallee biodiversity' project funded by the Australian Government's 'Caring For Our Country'.
Farmers and agronomists around the Mallee have been wondering what could be achieved if some of the machinery and techniques used in no-till cropping were applied to establishing biodiversity plantings from seed. Current techniques use special-purpose, single furrow seeders and are fairly slow. The project will use broadacre farm seeders and weed control techniques, which are much more efficient and open up many possible ways of establishing larger plantings.
The concept will be trialled on 100 hectares of biodiversity plantings on at least 10 farms in the area. If successful, establishing biodiversity plantings could be routinely done by farmers in the same way as any other crop.
